Local business leaders join in raising awareness, celebrating successes of corporate work-study program

BOSTON, Massachusetts – Boston-based staffing agency Hollister hosted a wine tasting last Tuesday at their 75 State Street office in recognition of North Cambridge Catholic High School’s corporate work-study program, an initiative that allows students to complete internships with many of the area’s most prominent businesses and, in doing so, pay for their own tuition.
Through the program, students from North Cambridge Catholic High School are able to finance their tuition by interning one day a week in the offices of 92 local businesses. Students involved in the program, many of them from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, also learn valuable time-management and employment skills that give them a necessary jump-start on their path to college, and ultimately, to gainful employment.
“I have learned so much in my internships,” said Hollister’s NCCHS intern, Olivia Wright. “I’ve worked for three well-known companies and at each one I’ve learned a different skill-set that will give me an advantage over other students when it comes time to go into the real world and find a job. The main thing I’ve learned is that in order to succeed, college will be a must for me.”
More than 120 area professionals attended the event, which allowed them to network while sampling the Argentinean wines of Vina Maipu, provided by Pepe Portuondo. Many attendees were from sponsor organizations of NCCHS, and others came to learn about the benefits of sponsorship.
“I am so grateful to Kip Hollister for giving us the opportunity to address such a large network of business leaders,” said North Cambridge Catholic High School’s president, Jeff Thielman. “We welcome any opportunity to spread the word about our sponsorship opportunities, and this event has been a huge success. We are very appreciative of Hollister’s consistent civic leadership and ability to fill a room for a good cause.”
Using a combination of longer days, collaborative learning and programs like their work-study initiative, NCCHS provides the structure and learning opportunity necessary for their students to succeed. As a testament to the success of the school’s programs, 96 percent of NCCHS graduates have gone on to attend a 2 or 4-year College.
“We have been a sponsor of North Cambridge since its inception,” said Hollister’s founder and CEO, Kip Hollister. “The rewards for both Hollister and the students have been tremendous. I’m convinced that it is our social responsibility to be a part of growing the leaders of tomorrow’s future, and for us that starts with this work study program and providing mentorship services to those students who come to us. I think every company should consider bringing a student on board each year.”
NCCHS is a member of the Cristo Rey Network, a cooperative web of college-preparatory schools serving students from a diverse range of economic and cultural backgrounds. Using a combination of longer days, collaborative learning and programs like their work-study initiative, NCCHS provides the structure and learning opportunity necessary for their students to succeed. As a testament to their influence, 96 percent of NCCHS graduates have gone on to attend a two or a four-year college.
